J&K Vocational Trainers launch indefinite strike
Srinagar, Apr 2: The Jammu and Kashmir Vocational Trainers Welfare Association (JKVTWA) has launched an indefinite strike to protest against “inadequate salaries” and the “flawed” Vocational Training Provider (VTP) model.
A statement of the JKVTWA issued here said that their peaceful advocacy had been ignored for years, leaving them with no choice but to take this drastic step.
It said the strike began on March 31, 2025, coinciding with Eid-ul-Fitr, saying, “After years of unfulfilled promises and neglect, we had no alternative.”
The JKVTWA said protests were held simultaneously in Kashmir and Jammu divisions, but the trainers alleged that while demonstrations were allowed in Jammu, authorities in Kashmir denied them the same right.
It said that they had given prior notice to all relevant authorities, including the Police and administration, and had ensured the protest would remain peaceful.
The JKVTWA said that despite these efforts, their right to assemble was unjustly denied.
They alleged that scores of vocational trainers, both men and women, as well as a two-month-old baby, were detained in various police stations across Srinagar.
Meanwhile, JKVTWA has vowed not to resume duties until their demands are met, acknowledging that the strike would affect students.
“It pains us deeply to see our students suffer, but when the future of educators is uncertain, how can we illuminate the path for them?” it said.
The trainers also condemned what they called the mistreatment of peaceful protesters on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, saying it had only strengthened their resolve.
“Our struggle is not just about our rights but is about securing the future of vocational education in Jammu and Kashmir,” they said, urging the government to take immediate action to meet their demands.
