Shopian, Oct 18: Residents of Mir Mohalla, Bongam in south Kashmir’s Shopian town are facing tremendous hardships due to damaged water pipes in the locality.

According to the residents, water gushing out of old and damaged water pipes are causing damage to the nearby road, mosque and the residential houses.

“ The water from the broken pipes frequently enters our houses and a nearby mosque,” said Ashiq Hussain, a resident.

He said that the leakage caused damage to the protection wall of the mosque.

“We had to rebuild the wall,” said Hussain. Hussain said that the leaked pipes had created potholes on a portion of the road, making it difficult for the commuters to commute along the damaged stretch. The resident said that the water pipes in the locality had not been replaced for the last 60 years.

“We have repeatedly requested the concerned department to replace the pipes, but they continue to ignore the issue,” he said.

The leakage from the pipes, according to the residents, continues for the last three years. “Officials from the Jal Shakti Department occasionally come to repair the pipes, but after a few days they start leaking again,” complained the residents.

Executive Engineer Abdul Rashid of the Jal Shakti Department told Greater Kashmir that a project to replace the old water pipes has already been approved under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. “The project is approved, and we will begin replacing the damaged pipes soon,” he said.
