Sgr-Leh NH closed

Ganderbal, Mar 15: The upper reaches of Ganderbal district including Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Sonamarg tourist resort received fresh snowfall of about 1 foot on Saturday.

The snowfall caused slippery rod conditions, disrupting the traffic movement on the Kangan-Gagangir road.

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway continued to remain closed for traffic on Saturday. The highway was closed last week due to heavy snowfall in the Zojila and Drass areas.

An official said that over 4 feet of snow had accumulated in the area and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which had started the snow clearance work on the highway had to leave it midway due to inclement weather and fresh snowfall.

He said that there had been many avalanches along the highway and as soon as the weather gets better, the snow clearance work will commence to connect the highway.

Meanwhile, Police in Ganderbal provided a helping hand to assist tourists and locals stranded due to heavy snowfall and inclement weather at Gund and Sonamarg.
