Srinagar, Apr 2: Adv Mir Imaad Rafi, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Foundation for Social Change, has  expressed concern over Pahalgam forest fires.

In a statement ,he said, “The recent outbreak of massive forest fires in several areas of Pahalgam, including Budroo, Kathsoo, Aishmuqam and Pendobal forest range, has caused significant damage to the local forest compartments, raising alarms across the region. In response to this environmental crisis, the Jammu Kashmir Foundation for Social Change, alongside various concerned members of civil society, has expressed deep concern and called for urgent intervention.”

Mir Imaad Rafi highlighted the need for a joint effort between the local community and government to address this pressing issue. “This is not just an environmental disaster; it threatens the very essence of Pahalgam’s natural beauty and its significance as a tourism destination. Immediate and coordinated action is needed to prevent further destruction,” he stated.

In an emergency meeting convened in Pahalgam, civil society members emphasised the necessity for comprehensive reforms to combat forest fires and safeguard the region’s environment.

However, they stressed that a more systemic, long-term approach is needed.

Imaad further elaborated on the importance of establishing greater institutional coordination between various  departments. “The pristine glory of Pahalgam, which draws thousands of tourists, will only remain intact if we protect its ‘Green Gold’ – the forests that sustain its beauty and ecological balance,” he said.

In addition to the call for better coordination, the Foundation plans to meet to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, requesting a meeting to discuss policy reforms. Imaad also proposed the creation of a “Citizens’ Environment Council” that would see local volunteers designated at the Panchayat level. These volunteers would be trained and ready to assist in emergency situations, such as forest fires, ensuring a swift and effective response when disasters strike.

The civil society group also emphasised the importance of widespread afforestation initiatives and active public involvement in protecting the region’s forests. “The participation of every individual is crucial to preserving our environment for future generations,” Imaad concluded.
