Srinagar, Jan 6: A light snow spell in the summer capital affected normal life due to slippery roads and waterlogging.

The locals woke up to a white sheet of snow in the morning following overnight snowfall. Although the main roads were cleared of snow by afternoon, alleys and footpaths were left out.

“These issues are giving a tough time to commuters and pedestrians. It was a brief spell of snow, and most of it melted by evening. Authorities should be more prompt in snow clearance operations,” said Zahid Ahmad, a local from Downtown.

The locals alleged that the use of excavators to clear snow in Srinagar areas ended up damaging roads and link roads. Earlier traders in Downtown also said that the ill-equipped machines used to clear snow from cobblestone footpaths are ending up damaging them. “In our area, the excavators were sent to clear the snow and our road is not properly macadamised. The excavator ended up damaging the road rather than clearing the snow,” said a local from Hazratbal.

Meanwhile, slippery roads end up giving commuters in Srinagar a tough time. They said following the snow and rains in Srinagar, the roads were waterlogged and turned slippery, which affected the navigation through roads.

“Since the snowfall, the roads have become more dangerous, and many accidents have occurred due to slippery roads. Authorities should take all measures so that road safety is enhanced,” said Irfan Ahmad, a commuter.

Officials have already passed advisories following the snowfall across Kashmir. Officials have urged commuters to consider all necessary measures and follow the SOPs to ensure their safety.
