Ramban court pronounces first-ever community service conviction under BNS 2023
Ukhral, Mar 22: In a landmark judgment, the Judicial Magistrate 1st class Ukhral, Manzar Muneer, delivered its first-ever community service conviction under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The verdict was pronounced in a case involving Arvind Singh, who was convicted under Section 355 of the BNS, 2023 for public misconduct in an intoxicated state. The accused was found causing public annoyance.
As part of the punishment, the court sentenced Ravinder Singh to three days of community service at Public Health Care Ukhral. His service will include cleaning of premises daily from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
To ensure compliance, the court directed Incharge Police Post Ukhral to monitor the community service and submit a detailed report along with photographic evidence under the supervision of BDO, Primary Healthcare. Ukhral.
In the case proceedings, the accused was represented by Advocate S S Bali, while the Union Territory (UT) was represented by Assistant Public Prosecutor S Ranjeet Singh. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court delivered the judgment.
This ruling marks a significant step in implementing the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and highlights the judiciary’s focus on alternative sentencing methods to promote accountability and social responsibility.
