Srinagar, Sep 01: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary and Jammu and Kashmir incharge, Tarun Chugh on Sunday said that the people of J&K have immense respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chugh's statement comes amid the BJP positioning itself as the party of choice against the traditional regional forces.

During a brief media interaction here, Chugh criticised the regional leadership, including the National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Congress, accusing them of being out of touch with the aspirations of the people.

“The people of J&K hold Prime Minister Narendra Modi in high esteem. On the other hand, the leadership of the NC, PDP, and Congress is misguided and is being rejected by the people,” he said.

Chugh also took a swipe at former chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti, describing them as part of a misguided leadership that is losing its relevance in J&K.

He singled out the NC Vice President, Omar Abdullah and labelled him as an established confused leader.

“Omar is uncertain about a pre-poll alliance with Congress and is unsure of how many seats they should contest in the upcoming assembly elections,” he said. “Omar is confused whether to contest the assembly elections or not. This is the indication of internal uncertainties within the opposition camp.”

As the electoral politics is heating up ahead of the assembly polls scheduled to be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, the BJP is making concerted efforts to consolidate its position in the region.

The counting of votes is set for October 8.
