Preventing deaths is possible
Srinagar, Jan 14: This winter has been particularly harsh for the people of Kashmir, with numerous weather-related accidents and health issues claiming lives across the region.
As the months of severe cold tighten their grip, experts feel prevention is the key to safeguarding lives.
Greater Kashmir aims to provide a comprehensive guide to preventing cold months from turning into a catastrophe.
Asphyxia Prevention
Over the past week, at least nine persons have been reported to have died of asphyxia, or lack of oxygen in their surroundings.
Doctors said such cases are often caused by improper ventilation and heating practices.
To prevent asphyxia:
Never use coal-based heating like coal bukhari and angeethi as these suck up oxygen
Carefully use LPG-based heating, ensuring proper ventilation
Always operate generators outside, far from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
Ensure proper ventilation in homes, with any heating devices in use
Use safe and well-maintained heating equipment
Be aware of the symptoms of asphyxia like headache, dizziness, and nausea
Strokes and
Cardiac events
In winter, people are especially prone to hypertension, strokes and cardiac events.
Doctors have raised alarm about the spike in cases of stroke and heart attacks in winter in Kashmir.
For preventing stroke and heart attack in winter:
Dress in layers and keep your body temperature stable to reduce stress on your heart
Elderly especially must be active indoors to keep blood circulation healthy but avoid overexertion, especially in cold weather
Regularly check your blood pressure and take prescribed medications as directed
Warm up before going outside, and limit time spent in freezing temperatures to prevent constriction of blood vessels
Smoking increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly in cold weather
Learn the symptoms of stroke (sudden weakness, slurred speech) and heart attack (chest pain, shortness of breath) and seek immediate medical help if they occur
Road Accidents
and Safety
The past two months have seen a significant number of road accidents in Kashmir, particularly on the National Highway resulting in scores of fatalities and injuries.
To prevent such accidents, the Traffic Department experts believe it is essential to follow safe driving practices including:
Avoiding travel when the roads are slippery
Driving slowly and cautiously on narrow, mountainous and snowy roads
Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles
Avoiding reckless driving and over-speeding
Ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, including functional brakes and adequate tire tread
Fire Incidents
With a few families being rendered homeless every passing day, fire incidents are one of the biggest catastrophic events in winter.
Fire incidents can occur due to electrical malfunctions, cooking accidents, or heating equipment.
To prevent fires:
Keep Kangris away from curtains, bedding, straw or anything that can easily catch fire
Dispose of Kangri ashes safely, ensuring dousing any cinders
Use wood bukahris carefully, ensuring safety of the surroundings
Regularly check electrical wiring and appliances
Managing COPD and Respiratory Issues
Kashmir has one of the highest burdens of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients in India. For individuals with respiratory or other issues, winter can exacerbate symptoms.
To manage COPD and respiratory issues:
Stay indoors during extreme cold weather
Use masks in public settings to prevent catching a respiratory illness
Follow medication regimens and consult healthcare providers for guidance
Get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia to prevent infections
Fall Prevention
Falls on snowy and slippery surfaces can be hazardous, particularly for the elderly and young children. Falls can happen in homes and also while out of homes, especially if the pathways are wet, icy or snowy – all three commonly prevalent these days in Kashmir.
For preventing falls:
Use handrails when walking on stairs
Wear proper footwear with good traction
Improve lighting in homes, especially in areas with slippery surfaces
Avoid overexertion and take regular breaks when engaging in physical activity
