Anantnag, Dec 11: Moul Mouj Foundation, in collaboration with Chinar International and GK Labs, organised a free medical and awareness camp for senior citizens at Sub-Centre Shekhpora, Shangus, a remote area in Anantnag. A total of 162 senior citizens received free consultations, investigations, treatment optimisation and medicines.

The camp highlighted a worrying trend: 79 seniors were hypertensive, and nearly 75% had uncontrolled blood pressure. The primary reasons were erratic treatment, missed doses and taking medicines only when experiencing headache or vertigo. Comprehensive awareness was provided, emphasising that blood pressure medication must be taken regularly, as uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart disease, stroke, eye complications and other serious health issues.

Common issues like joint and bone pains were also addressed. Seniors were counselled on the importance of hydration, daily gentle activity and faith-based practices to uplift mood and reduce stress.

A notable incident during the camp involved two grandchildren accompanying their grandparents who were found to have health concerns requiring further medical evaluation; necessary investigations were initiated on the spot.

In line with the Foundation’s mission, five financially marginalised senior citizens were identified for lifelong free treatment under MMF’s support programme.

Senior Geriatric Consultant Dr Zubair Saleem expressed gratitude to Dr Jahangir Bakshi, Director Health Services Kashmir and his team, for their continued support. He stated, “We conduct these camps in far-flung areas to bridge the gap in consultation and treatment. Every senior citizen, privileged or under-privileged, has an equal right to good health, and we are doing our bit to ensure that.”

Dr Saleem stressed the importance of adherence to medical advice, taking medications on time, and avoiding self-medication, especially antibiotics and painkillers.

The local community expressed deep gratitude for the camp, noting that the awareness sessions and treatment optimisation were highly beneficial and much needed.
