J&K writes new chapter in Santosh Trophy history
Srinagar, Nov 21: Jammu and Kashmir’s football team secured a historic victory by defeating Punjab in the opening match of the 78th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2024–25.
The closely contested game held at the GNDU Sports Complex on a crisp November afternoon marked a significant milestone for the team inspiring hope and enthusiasm among football fans in the region.
For decades Jammu and Kashmir’s football has been overshadowed by dominant teams like Punjab, a powerhouse with multiple Santosh Trophy titles. Matches between the two have often ended in disappointment for J&K, but this year’s campaign began with a shift in narrative. Under the leadership of head coach Mehraj Din Wadoo, a former Indian international and Kashmiri football icon, the team displayed discipline, resilience, and tactical brilliance.
“This match wasn’t just about winning it was about breaking stereotypes,” said Wadoo after the game. “J&K football has long been seen as an underdog. Today, we showed we belong among the elites.” The team's victory is especially significant considering Punjab’s strong reputation and last year’s runner-up status. For J&K, it was more than a triumph on the field—it was a statement of their evolving potential.
Adnan Ayub: The Hero of the Day
The match saw a strong defensive performance from both teams in the first half. Punjab controlled possession and created more chances, but J&K’s defense held firm. The breakthrough came in the 50th minute when J&K Bank captain Adnan Ayub scored the winning goal—a strike that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
“It’s a proud moment for me and the entire team,” said Ayub, who was awarded Player of the Match. “Scoring against a team like Punjab is no small feat, and this victory is dedicated to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have always supported us.”
Ayub’s leadership and composure were evident throughout the match, and his goal highlighted the team’s ability to capitalize on key moments.
A Coach’s Vision
Much of the team’s success is credited to Mehraj Din Wadoo, whose emphasis on fitness, unity, and tactical awareness has transformed the squad.
“What sets this team apart is their hunger to prove themselves,” Wadoo explained. “We’re not just here to participate; we’re here to compete.”
His leadership has instilled confidence in the players, enabling them to take on formidable opponents like Punjab with determination and focus.
This year’s success also reflects changes in the team’s formation process. In previous years, the selection process was criticized for favoritism and interference from unelected officials.
However, under the J&K Sports Council’s supervision and Wadoo’s leadership, the current squad was selected based on merit.
“This shift in approach has restored faith in the system,” remarked a senior official from the J&K Sports Council. “It’s a win for players, fans, and the integrity of the sport in J&K.”
With the Punjab challenge overcome, J&K’s chances of advancing in the tournament have improved significantly. The team faces Himachal Pradesh on November 22, followed by a match against Ladakh. While Punjab was the toughest opponent in Group A, complacency is not an option.
“We’ve taken one step, but the journey is long,” Wadoo cautioned. “Every match is a final for us, and we need to remain focused.”
Group dynamics remain competitive, with Ladakh defeating Himachal Pradesh 2–1 in the other match. For J&K, consistency will be key to progressing to the next stage.
As the team prepares for its next match, the players carry the weight of renewed expectations. This win against Punjab is not just a scoreline; it is a declaration of J&K football’s readiness to challenge the best in the country.
“For a region that has often been overlooked, this victory is a reminder of our potential and resilience,” Wadoo said with optimism.
Fans across the region will continue to cheer for their team, hoping this historic moment marks the beginning of a brighter, more competitive future for football in Jammu and Kashmir.
