J&K bags 10 medals at sub-junior Wushu Nationals in Coimbatore
Srinagar, Jun 5: The Jammu and Kashmir Sub-Junior Wushu team delivered an impressive performance at the 25th Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship held in Coimbatore, clinching a total of 10 medals — 2 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze.
As per a statement issued on Thursday, standout athletes Geenakshi Mehra and Kratavya Verma secured gold medals, with Mehra achieving her second consecutive national gold and Verma building on his international success after a bronze at the World Wing Chun Championship in China.
Hiranya Mahajan bagged 2 Silvers, Praznath Wangoo bagged Silver, Dhruvika Gupta bagged 02 Bronzes, and Mohd Amaanullah and Rudransh Sanyal bagged Bronze medals in the Championship.
Earlier, the J&K Sports Council organised a 21-day coaching camp for the Sub-Junior Wushu team at Jammu and screened the team through screening members on 22nd May 2025. Appu Jamwal accompanied the team as coach.
The Wushu Association of J&K conducted a selection trial at Jammu through the constituted selection committee on 2nd to 3rd May 2025 as per the directions and the guidelines of the J&K Sports Council.
On the arrival of the team at Jammu, Dronacharya Kuldeep Handoo congratulated the team for the excellent performance in the championship. He conveyed his congratulatory message to both the gold medallists, Geenakshi Mehra and Kratavya Verma, as it was the second continuous gold medal for Geenakshi, and earlier Kratavya secured bronze medals in the World Wing Chun Championship in China. He conveyed his best wishes to other medallists for bringing the glory to the UT of J&K at the national level.
He thanked J&K Sports Council for the support and taking these combat sports to new heights. He also thanked Lieutenant Governor Sh. Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Sports Minister Satish Sharma, Secretary to the Govt. of J&K (Sports) Sarmad Hafeez and Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul for the support, opening of KIC and PMDP wushu centres across the UT J&K and providing the best facilities to the wushu athletes in J&K to exhibit their best at the national and international level .
Vijay Saraf (President), Ranjeet Kalra (VP) and Bhavneet (General Secretary) congratulated all the medallists and the participants for making the UT J&K and the Wushu Association of J&K proud. They also expressed their gratitude to the government for making the sports a priority and bringing the UT J&K amongst the best 10 states/UTs in the country.
