Jashn-e-Dal 2025 kicks off with over 700 athletes
Srinagar, Sep 13: The 26th edition of Jashn-e-Dal, a water sports festival on Dal Lake, opened Saturday with the introduction of dragon boat racing and a call from police officials to use the event as a platform for youth inspiration, tourism promotion, and stronger community ties.
Additional Director General of Police (Armed) Anand Jain, who inaugurated the event, described it as more than just a sporting spectacle, emphasising its role in inspiring youth, boosting tourism, and fostering stronger ties between the police and the public.
The annual festival, which began in 1999, has grown into a cherished tradition in Jammu and Kashmir, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators to the iconic Dal Lake.
This year’s edition introduced dragon boat racing as a new attraction, adding to the excitement of the event. Over 700 athletes are competing across 20 different disciplines, including sports featured in prestigious platforms like the Olympics, Asian Games, and national championships.
“This festival is not just about water sports, it’s a platform to inspire our youth, showcase the beauty of Jammu and Kashmir to the world, and strengthen the bond of trust between the police and the public,” ADGP Jain said. He underscored the event’s role in promoting community engagement and creating a neutral space where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to celebrate talent and camaraderie.
Jain also announced an exciting upcoming event for Srinagar: the All India Cluster Judo Championship, scheduled for the first week of October 2025. The championship is expected to draw nearly 3,000 athletes from across India, further cementing Srinagar’s growing reputation as a hub for national sporting events. “This judo championship will be a landmark event, showcasing the city’s ability to host large-scale competitions and attract talent from every corner of the country,” Jain added.
The introduction of dragon boat racing at Jashn-e-Dal this year has been a major highlight, captivating both participants and spectators. The vibrant races, set against the backdrop of Dal Lake’s serene waters and the majestic Zabarwan mountains, have added a fresh dimension to the festival.
The event’s diverse range of disciplines ensures that it appeals to athletes of varying skill levels, from amateurs to seasoned professionals, while also engaging audiences with its thrilling competitions.
Jashn-e-Dal has long been recognised as a key driver of tourism in the region. By showcasing Srinagar’s natural beauty and cultural vibrancy, the festival attracts visitors from across India and beyond, contributing significantly to the local economy. “Events like these put Srinagar on the map as a destination not only for its scenic allure but also for its vibrant sporting culture,” Jain said.
“Jashn-e-Dal is a celebration of togetherness. It creates opportunities for meaningful interactions and helps bridge the gap between the police and the people we serve,” Jain said.
