Group of terrorists believed hiding in Udhampur forests: Police

Jammu, Aug 7: The anti-terror operation launched in the remote areas of Khaned in Basantgarh by the security forces entered the second day with the forces having apprehension that a group of terrorists was likely hiding in the forests of the area sharing the boundary with Kathua district.

An encounter broke out in the area on Tuesday evening after which no fresh exchange of fire took place.

Falling under the jurisdiction of Basantgarh Police Station in Jammu’s Udhampur district, the Khaned area is one of the remotest corners of the district having a dense forest cover with very tough terrain.

The exchange of gunfire between the security forces and terrorists took place in the area on Tuesday during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO).

Reinforcement was immediately rushed to the area after the initial exchange of fire and more teams were rushed to the area for strengthening the cordon on Wednesday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udhampur-Reasi Range, Rayees Muhammad Bhat said that the operation in the area was launched after reports and intelligence input of the presence of terrorists.

“A group of terrorists is likely present in the area and we are conducting the operation,” he said.
