‘Elderly need compassionate, consistent, accessible healthcare interventions’
Srinagar, Nov 26: As part of an ongoing collaborative effort to enhance healthcare access and promote senior citizen well-being, GK Labs+, Moul Mouj Foundation, and Help Foundation organised a successful free medical camp at Baitul Meeras, the Help Foundation Office in Srinagar.
The camp was specifically designed to address the unique healthcare needs of seniors. It offered comprehensive medical evaluations, including specialist consultations, blood tests, and free distribution of essential medicines. The attending seniors were counselled and treated for a range of health issues, including depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, urinary problems, heart problems and memory-related concerns such as forgetfulness.
Dr. Zubair Saleem, geriatric consultant, highlighted a significant concern observed during the camp—polypharmacy, where patients were taking multiple medications, often leading to adverse health outcomes.
“Many patients exhibited side effects because they were unknowingly consuming two or more medications for the same condition, but under different brand names,” said Dr Saleem. He urged seniors to have their medications physically verified by their doctors to avoid duplication and harmful interactions. “Polypharmacy is a major contributor to adverse health outcomes in the elderly, and it requires careful attention,” he added.
The local population expressed deep satisfaction with the camp, appreciating the organizers for their initiative and holistic approach to healthcare. Many requested that such camps be conducted more frequently to address the pressing health challenges faced by seniors.
The camp not only provided immediate medical relief but also raised awareness about the importance of proper medication management and regular health check-ups. The collaborative efforts of GK Labs+, Moul Mouj Foundation and Help Foundation highlights the need for compassionate, consistent and accessible healthcare interventions for the elderly, especially the neglected and marginalized seniors.
