Break the nexus

J&K has now been fighting against drug menace for many years. The rise in the cases of drug addiction may be attributed to reasons that are many and varied, and to work on each cause is a sustained task. It is a societal crisis that emerged slowly and attained monstrous proportions. As a society it is the duty of each one of us to stay guard in our area of influence, be it family, school, office, market or neighbourhood.

The fight against drug abuse is not something that can be entirely left to the government apparatus. As emphasised by the official and societal actors all the segments of the population have to forge an alliance against this menace. It is only possible when there is a collective will and to operationalise that will there is enough clarity on how to strike the head of the monster. However, the job of the concerned government departments in this regard is very well defined and they have the required strength to accomplish it.

Not a day passes without a news that a drug related arrest has been made or a haul of drugs has been seized and destroyed. While there is appreciation and praise for the agencies that go hard on the drug networks, there are expectations that this campaign against drug pedlars attains speed and nothing is left undone to uproot this menace.

The concerned departments in this regard are duty bound to bolster their operations against the criminal networks and the government has an obligations to provide the required human and material resource to such departments. If the operations against those who contribute to his menace are taken to another level, it will definitely strike fear in the hearts of those who are involved in such dastardly acts. An attitude of zero tolerance against drug related crimes must reflect in the actions of the concerned departments.

This will certainly yield dividends and we will find this society in a position to act from the other end. In a nutshell, a united effort is needed to root this evil out and salvage the society.
