98-year-old veteran treated at Military Hospital Jammu for Leukemia, bone fracture

Jammu, Feb 17: In a remarkable medical achievement, a 98-year-old veteran officer with a neck of femur fracture and newly diagnosed B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (blood cancer) has been successfully treated at 166 Military Hospital, Jammu.

“The veteran, who had additional health challenges, suffered the fracture on February 10 due to a fall. Upon evaluation, it was discovered that he also had bone marrow involvement indicative of chronic blood cancer. Recognizing the need for fracture stabilization to alleviate pain and promote mobility, surgery was promptly advised by the Hematologist at the Army Hospital,” said PRO Defence Lt Col Suneel Bartwal.

“The surgery, involving closed reduction and internal fixation with an Intertan Nail, took place on February 12, 2024, under general anesthesia with high-risk consent. The post-operative period progressed smoothly, and the patient began full weight-bearing ambulation with a walker the following day,” he said.

According to PRO Defence, today, on the 3rd day post-operation, the patient has been discharged from 166 Military Hospital.

He is now referred to an empanelled centre for further evaluation and management of B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia by a Hemato Oncologist.
