5 killed, 2 injured in Kargil road accident

Kargil, Jan 14: Five persons were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Kargil district of Ladakh on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at Shilikchey area in Kargil between a Scorpio and a tipper. A senior police officer told Greater Kashmir that five people lost their lives while two others sustained injuries in a road accident.

He said both the vehicles plunged into a gorge after the accident.

Police said soon after the accident, a team from Police Station Kargil and volunteers swiftly launched a rescue operation. All the injured were rushed to the hospital where doctors declared five individuals dead. The other two wounded remained in critical condition. Officials said that three of the deceased were locals, while the other two were residents of Uttar Pradesh. Kargil Police has registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
