2-day annual sports meet with over 1,000 participants concludes at boys' hostel GMC Srinagar
Srinagar, Oct 10: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar concluded its two-day annual sports meet at the boys' hostel on Friday with overwhelming participation from both students and faculty members. The events were organised by the sports committee of CASS union, GMC Srinagar, headed by Prof Iqbal Saleem Mir and assisted by Dr Arshad Rashid, Dr Rajandeep Singh Bali, Dr Obaid Ashraf and Faisal Manzoor (Students Sports Secretary).
Organising Secretary Dr Arshad Rashid said the event, a mandate of the National Medical Commission (NMC), witnessed participation of around 1,000 students and faculty members across a range of sporting disciplines.
“There were all sorts of sports this year, cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, carrom, and chess, along with track and field events. All batches participated with great enthusiasm, and the faculty also competed with fervour,” Dr Arshad said.
He said the event was inaugurated by Sakina Masood (Itoo), Minister for Health & Medical Education, Higher Education, School Education and Social Welfare, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday, while the valedictory session on Friday featured GMC Principal/Dean Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah as the chief guest and Prof. Muzaffar Jan, ex-HoD of Paediatrics and former chairman of the sports committee at GMC Srinagar, as guest of honour. Mr Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator of Associated Hospitals, was among the notable guests present in the gathering. The Principal/Dean, Prof. Iffat, in her address stressed the need for organising such events in order to improve the well-being of students and faculty at large and improve patient care ultimately. He added that senior faculty, including Prof Iqbal Saleem (HoD Surgery), Prof Rakesh (HoD Medicine), Prof Naveed Nazir (HoD Chest Diseases), Prof Sohail (Physiology), and Prof Altaf Kawoosa (Orthopaedics), actively took part in the competitions.
He said an exhibition match between senior professors and the medical college administration was among the highlights.
He added that the meet also featured lighter events like musical chairs and a spirited tug-of-war between students and faculty, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The musical chair event for females was won by Principal/Dean of GMC Srinagar Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah. Non-competitive events were held for the family members of the faculty. “The 2021 batch lifted the Best Batch Trophy for securing the maximum number of gold medals,” Dr Arshad said, adding that this year’s turnout exceeded expectations, with participation improving compared to previous editions.
