Educational standards in Poonch are declining as the government schools lack Government schools lack basic infrastructure. 

According to reports, some government schools in the district lack laboratories, libraries, play grounds, buildings, computer labs, despite release and utilization of government funds. 

Reports said the authorities at the helm lack proper planning to develop infrastructure of these schools.

Reports also said that many schools lack washrooms. A few schools, reports said, even lack drinking water facilities.

The  condition in schools along the LoC, according to reports is worse. These areas include Poonch, Mandi, Surankot, Mendhar, Balakot, Mankot and other forward areas near LoC. 

Reports added that the officials are scared to visitr these areas which has `affect ted the standard of education in schools.’

Not only this, the buildings constructed under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)  scheme have developed cracks  leaving them in dilapidated condition, they added. 

Offices of Zonal Education officers (ZEOs) of the district mostly are housed in rented accommodation and the articles provided by the government for the children go waste due to lack of sufficient space. 

 A grave resentment among the local children was brewing as they were enthusiastic  to attain knowledge but lack of facilities in Government schools shatter their aspirations very badly, reports said.

 Civil society groups have alleged that only paper work was done instead of taking any concrete step to develop the infrastructure and basic facilities of government run schools in the district. 

The groups have urged the concerned minister to honour the aspirations of the local youth of the district and take necessary steps in this regard.
