Masked gunmen on Thursday looted a bank in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district and decamped with around Rs 5 lakh, police said.

“Three to four gunmen barged into the J&K bank branch at Marhama village at Sangam Bijbehara this afternoon and ran away with cash,” a police official said.

A bank official said the gunmen looted Rs 5,00,889.                        

Soon after the incident, the government forces cordoned off the area and launched searches to nab the gunmen.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman in a statement said: “During preliminary investigation it came to fore that two militants identified as Rasik Nabi Bhat alias Owais son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat of Nowdal (Kirman Mohalla) and Salia Muhammad Akhoon alias Rehaan son of Ghulam Muhammad Akhoon of Arampora Gurikadal Medoora Tral, of Hizbul Mujahideen  are involved in the robbery.”

He said that a case vide FIR number 171/2017 under section 398, 454, 427 RPC, 7/25 A Act has been registered at police station Bijbehara and investigations are on.
