Zeeshan Altaf completes trek of 100 high-altitude lakes in J&K

Srinagar, Sep 5: Kashmir, with its snow-capped mountains and shimmering freshwater lakes, is a paradise for those who seek solace and challenge in nature's embrace. Each year, this enchanting landscape draws thousands of trekkers, eager to explore its hidden gems and experience the serene majesty of its high-altitude wonders.

Among these intrepid explorers is Zeeshan Altaf, a name that has become synonymous with adventure in the Valley.

For years, Zeeshan has journeyed through the rugged terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, driven by an insatiable love for the mountains and a deep connection to the pristine lakes that dot the landscape. On the 1st of September, Zeeshan reached a milestone that few can even dream of—a century of high-altitude lakes trekked, with the final ascent to the ethereal Gurwansar Lake marking the culmination of his extraordinary journey.

At 32, Zeeshan Altaf, a passionate trekker from Rambagh, has achieved a milestone few can boast of—completing the trek of 100 high-altitude lakes in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Zeeshan’s journey doesn’t end here. He is determined to continue his adventure and is now seeking the support of stakeholders to help him reach even greater heights.

Zeeshan, who embarked on his trekking journey in 2017, reflects on how what started as a casual interest quickly evolved into a full-fledged passion. "It began as a small-time interest and developed into a passion that drove me to complete this feat over the years. Trekking 100 lakes was a dream, and I'm thrilled to have achieved it. I’m deeply in love with mountains and alpine lakes, and I consider myself fortunate to be born in a place that offers both," he said.

Known officially as Mudasir Altaf, Zeeshan's athletic background as a cricketer played a significant role in his trekking accomplishments. His high level of fitness, honed through years of sports, was instrumental in his success. Zeeshan's journey began with the J&K Mountaineers Adventure Club, a group that he credits with sharpening his trekking skills. Among the lakes he has trekked are Gadsar I, Gadsar II, Damamsar, Bandsar, Bodsar, Pamsar, Kharagalisar, Chinamargsar, Lakutsar, Pathrisar, and many others.

"Trekking with this club has been an incredible experience. It’s not just about the physical challenge but also about staying connected with nature. Trekking teaches us about our homeland and underscores the importance of preserving it," he added.

In 2020, Zeeshan took his passion a step further by launching his own trekking club, Compass Crew Trekking and Adventure Club. Through this initiative, he regularly organises treks to mountains and lakes across Kashmir, guiding others to discover the untouched beauty of the region. The club boasts a dedicated team, including members like Shafayat Dar, Junaid Ashraf, Musaib Manzoor, Showkat Dar, Manzoor Mir, Muzaffar Rather, Zahid Wani, and Burhan Shafi, who have also trekked dozens of lakes.

Amid the growing concerns over drug use and unhealthy lifestyles among the youth in Kashmir, Zeeshan sees adventure sports as a beacon of hope. "Adventure sports offer a way to keep our youth engaged, fit, and mentally healthy. The beautiful landscape of Kashmir is perfect for trekking and other activities that promote well-being. By participating in these activities, we can help keep many diseases at bay and steer clear of negative influences," Zeeshan said.

With his sights set on scaling the world’s highest peaks, including Mount K2 and Mount Everest, Zeeshan is ready to take on the ultimate challenge. However, he acknowledges the financial barriers that stand in his way. "Coming from a middle-class family, I cannot afford these treks, which cost millions of rupees. I hope that companies and individuals will come forward to sponsor these expeditions, allowing me to make a mark for myself and for Jammu and Kashmir in the world of trekking," Zeeshan concluded.
