Srinagar, Oct 29: A 23-year-old boy sustained injuries after he was stabbed by another youth at the playground of historic SP College here.

Police identified the injured as Momin Ahmad Dar son of Riyaz Ahmad Dar from Anantnag who presently resides at Basant Bagh area in Srinagar.

As per the police, the victim has stated that he was stabbed by his “girlfriend’s friend Arslan Aijaz, son of Aijaz Ahmad Bhat from Barbarshah, who is a Swiggy Delivery Boy, with the motive being estranged love."

"The victim was admitted to SMHS hospital and a police party also rushed there. The victim was stabbed on the left abdomen and head and is presently stable," the police said.

The police stated that a case vide FIR No. 62/2024 under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Kothibagh. "Further investigation has been taken up," the Police said.

The Police further informed that the investigating team has apprehended the accused Arslan. "Further investigation is under progress," the Police said.

As the news about the stabbing spread, concern was being raised that stabbing incidents were new crime challenges for the J&K Police.

Even if the incidents are not happening on a daily or weekly basis, such incidents were reported frequently during the last few years.

However, a top police official said that stabbing incidents have not reached to that level yet where it can pose a challenge. "Just one or two incidents are reported in a year. It is not a challenge yet. Few incidents have been reported where youth have been found accused in it," the police official said.

During the past few years, around half a dozen incidents of stabbing were reported at various places. On June 1, 2024, a youth was stabbed in Srinagar’s Karan Nagar area and was hospitalised.

Also, a teenager was stabbed to death in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on July 8 of 2024 while another incident was reported on April 1 of 2024 wherein a teenage boy received injuries after being stabbed in Maloora area of Srinagar district.

On September 2023, a teenager was stabbed to death at Dalgate area of Srinagar even as the accused was arrested as well. On August 29 2023, a youth was stabbed with a sharp-edged weapon at Government Polytechnic College Bemina.

On January 11 of 2021, a boy was killed after being stabbed while another was injured in a scuffle near Dastgeer Sahib (RA) Shrine at Khanyar.
