Youth dies in road accident at Shalteng
Srinagar, Nov 30: A 21-year-old youth lost his life in a road accident at Shalteng area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday morning, officials said.
According to officials, the accident took place near the Gurdwara at Shalteng when a motorcycle collided with a Tavera vehicle. The motorcyclist sustained critical injuries in the impact. Officials said that he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The deceased was identified as Faiq, son of Muzaffar Ahmad, a resident of Shalteng.
A police officer of the concerned police station confirmed the incident while speaking to Greater Kashmir. He said that a person was killed in the tragic accident, and the police have taken cognisance of the matter.
“Yes, the accident occurred this morning, and unfortunately, the young rider could not survive the injuries. An FIR has been lodged, and investigations are on to ascertain the circumstances that led to the collision,” the officer said.
Locals in the area expressed deep grief over the death. They termed the incident yet another reminder of the rising road fatalities in Srinagar.
Residents and commuters said that such incidents have become frequent, particularly along the Bypass and adjoining areas where heavy traffic movement, including cabs, trucks and high-speed vehicles, is common.
“Every other day, we hear about somebody losing their life on the road. Overspeeding and rash driving have become a routine. Authorities must act before more innocent lives are lost,” said a commuter from the area.
In the past few years, several young people have died in road accidents across Srinagar, particularly in the area, triggering growing concern among families and civil society. People have urged the police and traffic authorities to launch strict drives to curb overspeeding and enforce road safety regulations effectively.
“We request strict monitoring and enforcement. A strong system can prevent these tragedies,” said another resident.
