X blocks 3500 posts, deletes 600 accounts after Centre flags obscene Grok content
New Delhi, Jan 11: Social media platform X has blocked around 3,500 posts and deleted about 600 accounts after the Centre flagged the circulation of obscene content on the platform, NDTV reported, citing government sources.
The platform has assured authorities that it will comply with Indian regulations and prevent such content in future.
The action follows a directive issued last week by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, which sought an immediate compliance report from X Corp over the misuse of its AI assistant, Grok, to generate and share obscene and explicit material.
The ministry warned that failure to comply would be “viewed seriously” and could invite strict legal action under Indian laws.
According to the notice, users were misusing Grok to create or operate accounts that generated and circulated derogatory and vulgar images and videos of women.
The Centre asked X to review Grok’s technical and governance frameworks and enforce stricter user policies, including suspending or terminating violators, NDTV reported.
The ministry also cautioned that non-compliance could lead to the loss of safe harbour protection under the IT Act and trigger penal action under laws such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Indecent Representation of Women Act and the POCSO Act.
