Baramulla, Feb 19: Musharaf Qayoom, a 19-year-old Wushu sensation from Baramulla, has added another feather to his cap by clinching a silver medal in the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship.

Known for his consistent success in Wushu championships over the years, Musharaf's dedication and hard work have earned him both gold and silver medals at various national and international events in the past.

Musharaf's journey into the world of Wushu began at a young age when he committed himself to rigorous training and quickly gained a commendable reputation for his skill and determination in this combative sport.

"I have been actively participating in numerous championships since childhood and have worked hard to earn a name in this combative sport," Musharaf told Greater Kashmir.

At this young age, Musharaf's success has made him a rising star in the martial arts community.

The recent achievement at the All India Inter University Wushu Championship which was held at Jammu University from February 13 to 17 marks a historic moment for Musharaf.

It was for the first time that Musharaf Qayoom represented Kashmir University and secured the 2nd rank nationwide in a fiercely contested tournament that featured over 1500 players from 130 different universities.

"I faced opponents from states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and other places but tried to maintain my position and was awarded a silver medal," Qayoom said.

He said he also faced senior national medalists of 2023 during the championship but made sure to earn his name in the competition.

Musharaf acknowledged the unwavering support of his family and the Punit Balan group.

"This is my first senior national championship, and securing the 2nd rank nationwide is a significant achievement for me," Musharraf said.

He extended his heartfelt thanks to his coaches, Ashfaq Wani and Kuldeep Handoo, and gave special recognition to the entire team at Kashmir University, especially his coach Muneer (Sir).

It is pertinent to mention that in 2022, Musharaf Qayoom, bagged India 2nd position in the 21st Junior National Wushu and won a silver medal.

Musharaf was also selected for the Wushu World Championship trials and selected for India camp.

Musharaf began training in combat sports when he was five years old.

He is now 19 years old and excelled in every competition held at national or international levels during the past 13 years

Musharaf has clinched 37 gold medals in martial arts games and is a renowned national wushu player besides a black belt in Taekwondo.

"The reason for my success is because of my mentors and the support and motivation I received from my mother from time to time," he said.

Musharaf won one bronze medal in the 64th National School Games 2018-19 taekwondo which was held in Nadiad Gujarat.

He has also won one silver medal which he won in the 10th open national taekwondo championship.
