Wushu Association of J&K announces junior team selection trials

Mumbai, June 30: The Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir is set to conduct selection trials for the UT J&K Junior Wushu team on July 1-2, at the SKISC in Srinagar.

According to the statement, the trials aim to form a team for the upcoming 23rd Junior National Wushu Championship, scheduled to take place at KPR College of Engineering in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Participants from 19 districts are expected to compete in the two-day selection process. It's worth noting that the UT J&K Wushu team finished as runners-up in the previous edition of the championship.

The Wushu Association of India plans to use the National Championship to shortlist top prospects for the Junior World Wushu Championship, set for September 22-30, 2024, in Brunei. A distinguished selection committee has been appointed for the trials, including Kuldeep Handoo (Dronacharya Awardee) as Chairman, and members Maqsood Rather, Faisal Ali (Padmashree Awardee), Ajaz Hassan, Sher Bhadur, and an observer from JKSC.

The selection process will begin with weigh-ins at SKISC Srinagar until 9 AM on July 1, followed by fixtures and draw of lots. Bouts and Taolu events will take place from 2 PM to 6 PM on the first day and from 9 AM until conclusion on July 2.

Following the trials, a coaching camp organized by the J&K Sports Council will be held from July 3-23 at SKISC Srinagar. The selected team will depart for the championship on July 23, 2024.

Participants are required to bring medical fitness certificates, passports, and Aadhar cards for the selection trials. This event marks an important step in the development of young Wushu talent in Jammu and Kashmir, with the potential for local athletes to represent India on the world stage, the statement said.
