World Breastfeeding Week celebrated at GMC Srinagar
Srinagar, Aug 2: The Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar hosted a poster competition among interns posted in GMC Srinagar on the theme ‘Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all’ to observe the first day of World Breastfeeding Week.
The event was chaired by Principal and Dean GMC, Prof Iffat Hassan Shah in the presence of Administrator GMC Srinagar and Associated Hospitals, Muhammad Ashraf Hakak, Head of the Department Community Medicine GMC Srinagar, Prof. Dr S Muhammad Salim Khan, and Medical Superintendent SMHS Hospital Prof S Muhammad Salim Khan.
Twenty-one interns participated in the poster competition.
The top three finishers in the competition were Zakira Afzal, Azra Shakeel, and Suhaib Farooq.
The Principal and Dean appreciated the work of the participants and felicitated the winners and participants with mementoes and certificates.
In this event, National Trainer IYCF J&K, Dr Mariya Amin Qureshi; SPM Dr Muzamil Hassan Lecturer, resident medical officers, and staff of the urban primary health centre of SMHS Hospital were also present.
The event was coordinated by Dr Shifana, a senior resident of community medicine and incharge of UPHC SMHS Hospital Srinagar.
The activities related to World Breastfeeding Week would be further carried out at various health centres in block Hazratbal, a field practice area of GMC Srinagar.
Prof Iffat Hassan appreciated the Department of Community Medicine for organising the event and called for mass awareness about breastfeeding.
She also appreciated the skills of interns who participated in the poster competition and highlighted the importance of breastfeeding through art.
