Srinagar Nov 12: An impressive workshop on shrinking spaces and climate change with special focus on waste management was held at Govt College for Women M A Road Srinagar on Wednesday.

The speakers stressed on inhouse composting of biodegradable waste especially kitchen waste so that pressure on landfill sites is brought down. Noted activist and Chairman J&K Climate Action Group-JKCAG Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat while addressing the students and staff of the college said that population explosion and urbanisation is shrinking Kashmir’s landmass and Govt authorities are unable to find enough land to create sanitary landfill sites.

He stressed on students and staff of Govt Women’s College Srinagar to start inhouse waste processing especially the food and other biodegradable waste.

“The families who own one kanal or more land in Srinagar must have a compost pit in their kitchen garden and they must dump all the food waste , dry leaves , vegetable and fruit waste in it. If every household in Srinagar does this in the next one year we can reduce the daily waste generation from 700 metric tons to 200 metric tons. This is the only way to secure our future. He appreciated the Principal and staff of the college for the initiative they have taken to process garden waste , leaves and other organic matter. We request the principal to start processing the food waste as well which is generated by students , staff and in the college canteen” said Dr Raja Muzaffar Principal of the college Prof Yasmeen Farooq in her welcome address stressed upon students to live sustainable lives and start caring for the environment as climate change was directly impacting Kashmir valley.

Prof Suzana Bashir of Botany Department gave away a vote of thanks and appreciated the principal of the college for her support and cooperation in making the campus neat and green. She thanked guest speaker Dr Raja Muzaffar. A waste segregation activity took place at the end of the workshop where Dr Muzaffar demonstrated how to segregate the waste. Principal Prof Yasmeen Farooq felicitated guest speaker Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat.
