Srinagar, Dec 23: To bridge the gap between scientific research and effective policymaking a five-day workshop ‘Science-Policy Interface’ started at University of Kashmir (KU) here on Monday.

The workshop aims to bring together scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to create a framework for informed policy recommendations to address local needs and has been organized by the Department of Environmental Science (DES), KU in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science, Govt. Degree College (GDC) D.H. Pora, Kulgam and sponsored by KU and ANRF under Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR).

While emphasizing upon the importance of applied scientific research in tackling real-world problems Dean Research KU, Prof M. Sultan Bhat said in his address “Scientific solutions are crucial for shaping effective policies and addressing environmental and ecological issues in the region.”

In his address Registrar KU, Prof Naseer Iqbal, stressed on the societal impact of such initiatives and the University’s commitment to encourage scientific policy based research.

“Our University supports research that contributes to policymaking and societal well-being and this workshop is a great step towards social impact,” he stated.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences KU, Prof Ghulam Jeelani, stressed on the significance of collaborative and meaningful scientific research.

Principal, GDC D.H. Pora Kulgam, Prof. Sami Jan, highlighted the significance of such collaborative programs to create a framework for informed policy recommendations tailored to local needs.

Earlier, in his welcome address, coordinator and convenor of the workshop, DES KU, Dr. Sami Ullah Bhat, described the workshop as an innovative and productive initiative aimed at integrating scientific insights with policy-making to address pressing environmental challenges.

The event includes eminent speakers and experts from academic institutions, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the science-policy nexus.

The workshop features four technical sessions, two panel discussions, and a field visit over five days, aiming to formulate actionable recommendations for policy making.

The proceedings of the inaugural session were conducted by Dr. Mohd Sharjeel Sofi, faculty at DES KU, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Aftab Ahmed Bhat, Assistant Professor, GDC D.H. Pora, Kulgam and co-convener of the program. The inaugural session was attended by various directors, heads, faculty members, research scholars, and students of the campus.
