Srinagar, Dec 5: A ten-day workshop on ‘Biomaterials and Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine’ was inaugurated at SKUAST-Kashmir’s main campus in Shalimar.

The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Health Research, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

More than 20 scientists and research scholars from across the country are participating to update their knowledge and refine their skills on the application of biomaterials and stem cells. The workshop will feature lectures and demonstrations from leading national and international experts in stem cell research.

Vice Chancellor Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, the Chief Guest, congratulated the workshop organizers for choosing a theme with potential to shape the future of therapeutics and personalized medicine. He highlighted SKUAST-K’s achievements in research and innovation, particularly in animal vaccine technology, reproductive biotechnology, stem cell and biomaterials research, and antimicrobial resistance.

Dr Geeta Jotwani, Senior Deputy Director General of ICMR, appreciated the university’s efforts in addressing issues of common concern. She assured full support for public health-related endeavors and shared the journey of framing regulations and guidelines for stem cell use in medicine. She also discussed ICMR’s research activities, priority areas, and various funding schemes.

Director Research Prof Haroon Naik highlighted pressing societal issues related to emerging health threats and the scope of regenerative medicine. He also elaborated on key initiatives taken by SKUAST-K in the field of One Health.

Prof Mohammad Altaf Bhat, Incharge Dean of the Veterinary Faculty, discussed research achievements in regenerative medicine and expressed hope that participants will gain knowledge about stem cells and biomaterials, and develop skills for their medical application.

Workshop Convenor Dr Amatul Muhee presented the welcome address, while Organizing Secretary Dr Mudasir Bashir Gugjoo provided a detailed account of the 10-day workshop. A compendium was released during the inaugural function, and Prof Azmat Alam Khan, OSD to the Vice Chancellor, delivered the vote of thanks.

The inaugural session was attended by university officers, heads of divisions, and faculty members.
