Women police stations increased from 2 to 10 in J&K during 2014-22: MHA

Srinagar, Dec 6: The number of women police stations has increased from 2 to 10 in J&K since 2014, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Tuesday.

Replying to a query raised by Member Parliament L S Tejasvi Surya, the Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that as per the data on police organisations compiled by Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the number of women police stations has increased from 518 to 745 from 2014 to 2022 across India.

“The number of women police stations in J&K was only 2 in 2014 which has increased to 10 till 2022,” the Union Minister said.

The Union Minister further stated that it was primarily the responsibility of the State Government and UT Administrations to recruit more women police personnel including improvement of gender balance.

“The Centre also issues advisories to the States and UTs for increasing the number of women in the police forces,” he said.

As per the statistics, the Minister said that the number of women police personnel has increased from 97518 in 2013 to 246103 in 2022 which is an increase from 5.87 percent of the total strength in 2013 to 11.75 percent of the total strength in 2022.

“The MHA has issued several advisories to all the State Governments and UT Administrations to increase the representation of women police to 33 percent of the total strength,” he said.

He said the States and UT administrations have been requested to create additional posts of women constables, Sub-Inspectors.

“The aim is that each police station should have at least three women Sub-Inspectors and 10 women police constables, so that a women’s help desk is manned round the clock,” he said.

The Union Minister further said that States have been advised to strengthen welfare measures for women police personnel and ensure their safety and provide a conducive work environment as well.

“Police being a State subject, it is responsibility of the State governments and UT administrations to ensure promotions of women police personnel in various grades in terms of rules,” he said.

As per the official figures J&K has around 2598 female police personnel including six Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP), 56 Inspectors, 67 Sub Inspectors (SI), 14 Assistant SI, 551 Head Constables, 1482 Constables and 417 other category female police personnel.
