Woman’s death evokes protest at GMC Baramulla

Baramulla, Nov 28: The untimely demise of 34-year-old Dilshada Begum just hours after delivering a healthy baby boy has ignited fury against the Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla.

The incident unfolded on late Monday post delivery. The aggrieved family members said that the woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Monday afternoon. However, post delivery negligence at the hospital resulted in her death.

The protesting relatives said that despite desperate pleas for medical attention, the family alleges that only a nurse was dispatched dismissing their concerns.

They said after around five hours of delivering a healthy baby boy, the woman complained of uneasiness, discomfort, and sweating.

They said as the health situation of the woman deteriorated they made hue and cry and after that only a doctor visited. However tragically it proved too late and Dilshada succumbed while being rushed to the operating room.

Protesters at the deceased woman’s residence demanded accountability, questioning the hospital’s adherence to recent directives for night visits by the concerned Chief Medical Officer. Muhammad Ramzan, a relative, criticised the negligence, asserting that prompt intervention could have saved a life.

“After complaining of continuous discomfort and uneasiness, the doctor did not bother to visit the helpless patient. Even repeated distress calls were made and in response a nurse was sent who said everything is alright,” said Ramzan. “How can they leave a patient like this? Why did the doctors not bother to at least inquire about her health? We don’t want someone else to die like this. The authorities must fix responsibility,” added Muhammad Ramzan.

The deceased woman is survived by two children and was laid to rest on Tuesday morning amidst a heart-wrenching scene at her native village, Khadniyar. Emotions ran high, with women beating their chests and men consoling the grieving family.

In response to the uproar, GMC Baramulla issued a detailed press release, acknowledging the incident and assuring a swift investigation. The hospital’s version highlights efforts to provide optimal care but acknowledges the need for a thorough examination.

The Principal of GMC Baramulla, Dr Ruby Reshi, in her press release stated that they have initiated an immediate inquiry, forming a committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the woman.

The hospital urged caution against allegations, emphasising their commitment to transparency and cooperation with the investigative committee.
