Woman among 3 injured in road accident at Sakidafar

Srinagar, Apr 15:  At least three people, including a woman, were injured after an auto rickshaw turned turtle at Ganderpora locality of Sakidafar in Downtown.

The locals blamed the dilapidated road for the incident. They also expressed concern over frequent accidents in Downtown mainly due to uneven road surface.

“Three people were injured, and many others had a narrow escape after the auto-rickshaw turned turtle. These accidents take place on a waterlogged road because it is impossible to see potholes. We appeal to authorities to expedite work on roads and fix the drainage system,” Altaf Ahmad, a commuter, said.

A witness said that the accident took place as the road in the area is dotted with potholes. The problem was compounded due to waterlogging.  The public transport operators, including auto rickshaw owners, said that it is difficult for them to navigate the city amid what they called “death traps.”

Locals said that several accidents have taken place in Downtown and adjacent areas in the past several days amid rains. They said that amid the ongoing developmental works, no safety measures have been put in place.

“The authorities are digging up roads without any safety measures. The roads are dug up and left abandoned which results in various accidents on a daily basis,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a local.

Greater Kashmir did a series of stories on the issue of safety measures. The officials said that they would ensure that all the precautionary measures are in place. However, locals said on the ground, there is no change. They said that amid waterlogging, the construction material dumped on roads also poses risks to the commuters.
