WGAJK wraps up district-level winter sports championship in Gulmarg
Gulmarg, Feb 4: The Winter Games Association of Jammu & Kashmir (WGAJK) successfully wrapped up its electrifying display of winter sports—a two-day district-level ski, snowboard, and Nordic sporting championship for both boys and girls at Gulmarg.
The championship, as per the press release issued on Tuesday, featured competitors across various age categories, including Open, JI, J2, and CI, C2, and saw around 200 athletes from different districts of Jammu and Kashmir participating in Slalom and Giant Slalom events for alpine skiing and snowboarding.
The event took place on the picturesque Church Slopes of Gulmarg and was organised in collaboration with WGAJK, the J&K Sports Council, and the Department of Tourism Kashmir.
The championship showcased the region's growing prominence in winter sports, highlighting both the athletic talent and the winter tourism potential of the area.
Assistant Director of Tourism Gulmarg, Tahir Wani, distributed medals to the winners. "I am so happy to see so many young kids participating in skiing and snowboarding. They also motivate others to take up winter sports. Our department is always there to assist and encourage them," he added.
President of WGAJK, Rouf Tramboo, thanked all the athletes, technical officials, association members, and officials of the Sports Council and Tourism Department. "WGAJK’s main focus is to engage all districts, and today's participation from districts across Jammu and Kashmir was really great. Some young athletes from South Kashmir took part in the skiing events, and we encourage more young skiers and snowboarders to join this sport," added Tramboo.
AD Tourism Tahir Wani was the chief guest, while Divisional Sports Officer Central Javid Ur Rehman and Divisional Sports Officer Kashmir Madam Gazala also graced the occasion and distributed medals among the winners.
President of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir (WGAJK), Rauf Tramboo, appreciated the athletes for their participation in the district-level championship. He encouraged them to stay focused on the sport, as it could open doors to national and international championships.
