Week-long Golf League starts at Royal Springs
Srinagar, Oct 11: Advisor to the J&K Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani on Saturday inaugurated the week-long Kashmir Golf League at the Royal Springs Golf Course (RSGC), Srinagar, a league-format event aimed at boosting the golfing culture in the Valley.
Speaking to Greater Kashmir at the inaugural ceremony, Wani expressed satisfaction over the participation and said the event provides a platform for local golfers to showcase their talent.
“This is a league event in which several private teams have gathered and will play together over the next seven days. I am very happy that we are starting it here today,” he said.
He said that in this period of time, when it was autumn and the weather was great, it was good to have such a league event here.
He further said that there were plans to establish a golf academy to nurture young talent from the school level.
“We are trying to make a golf academy where our children can come from the school level and practice. We want to take it to a level where they can play in national and international tournaments,” Wani said.
The event has been conceptualised and organised by Danish Aman, who said the Kashmir Golf League was modelled on popular franchise-based tournaments like the IPL.
“Basically, as you have seen, there is the IPL, the Cricket League, the Hockey League, and the Football League, in the same way, this Golf League has also started,” Danish said.
“There are seven teams owned by seven individuals, and each team has nine players. They will compete against each other in a league format, and the top scorers will move to the finals,” he added.
He said the total prize money for the event is Rs 3 lakh, while Royal Springs Golf Course is collaborating in providing logistics and facilities. “There will be nine matches played each day, totalling 54 matches before the final,” Danish said.
He said the week-long league is expected to showcase emerging talent and promote golf as an accessible sport in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharing details about the teams, Aman said the participating teams include Kashmir Swing Legends, captained by Ab Qayoom Tramboo; Milad Riders, captained by Gh Hassan Zargar, Majlis, captained by Altaf Beigh, Ahad Sultans, captained by Mushtaq Burza; Future World, captained by Md Yasin, and Snow Leopards, captained by Danish Aman.
Wani said such initiatives would be made a regular feature in Kashmir’s sporting calendar.
