Waterlogging disrupts life in Anantnag town after rains
Anantnag, Oct 7: Heavy rains on Tuesday led to severe waterlogging across several areas of south Kashmir’s Anantnag town, causing traffic disruptions and inconvenience for residents and shopkeepers.
Areas along KP Road—including Laizbal, Sadiqabad, and the General Bus Stand—were submerged as rainwater accumulated due to poor drainage.
Locals said even a moderate downpour leads to flooding in streets along KP Road and nearby localities. “The clogged drains overflow, making it extremely difficult for pedestrians and shopkeepers,” said Gulzar Ahmad, a shopkeeper along KP Road. “This inundated stretch has now become a common sight.”
Residents blamed the recurring waterlogging on the town’s inadequate drainage system and lack of maintenance. They said the problem has persisted for years, with little visible effort from authorities to address it.
“It is concerning that even moderate rainfall can bring key commercial and transport hubs to a standstill, highlighting the inefficiency of the drainage infrastructure,” locals added. They urged the administration to adopt long-term measures rather than relying solely on temporary pumping or clearance drives.
