Water leakage turns Teli mohalla road into safety hazard
Srinagar, Dec 25: Residents of Teli Mohalla in the Awantabhawan area of Srinagar have accused the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department of negligence over a long-pending water pipeline leakage that has disrupted daily life amid the ongoing harsh winter.
Locals said continuous leakage from the pipeline has led to persistent water accumulation on the road, which freezes in sub-zero temperatures, turning the stretch into a serious accident-prone zone. They alleged that despite repeated complaints over the past several weeks, the department has failed to take effective measures to permanently stop the leakage.
According to the residents, PHE officials had dug up the road to trace the source of the leak but were unable to locate it. They alleged that the road was left in a damaged condition, further aggravating the problem as water continues to collect in the broken surface and freeze repeatedly. “We repeatedly requested the concerned officials to repair the leakage and restore the road, but our pleas were ignored,” the residents said.
The affected road is a vital link connecting the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences and Kashmir University, heightening concerns over the safety of commuters, including patients, students and staff who use the route daily.
Residents have urged the concerned authorities to immediately plug the leakage, repair the damaged road and put adequate safety measures in place to prevent accidents, particularly during icy winter conditions.
