In the lively streets of Srinagar’s Old City, near the Khanqah Maula shrine, 50-year-old Muhammad Aslam Bhat sits in his small workshop, turning raw copper into beautiful creations. From jewelry and lamps to miniature models, his work blends Kashmir’s traditional designs with modern ideas, making his craft popular with locals and tourists alike. Muhammad Aslam grew up in a family of coppersmiths, spending his childhood surrounded by the sound of hammers and chisels. Muhammad Aslam realized he needed to do something different to keep the art alive. He started making unique items like keychains and decorative showpieces that couldn’t be replicated by machines. His innovative approach hasn’t gone unnoticed—he’s received state recognition for his efforts to preserve and modernize the craft. Despite his success, Aslam stays true to his roots, working every day in the same workshop where it all began. “This isn’t just about making products; it’s about keeping our culture alive,” he says. For Aslam, his work is more than a livelihood—it’s a passion. “Craft is God’s beloved,” he says, proud to be part of Kashmir’s rich heritage. Story by Interns: Rabia Mushtaq and Ifat Amin
