Baramulla, Apr 2:  A total of 91 drug peddlers including 11 hardcore drug peddlers were arrested under the PIT NDPS Act while 58 cases were registered under the NDPS Act in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district during the first quarter of the current year, Police said.

A Police official said that during this period, it also attached properties and vehicles of the drug smugglers which include three cars, a scooter, four residential houses and a shopping complex belonging to drug peddlers worth Rs 1.55 crore.

“The action was taken under Section 68-E, 68-F (1) of the NDPS Act, 1985,” a Police spokesman said.
He said that during investigations conducted by Police, the properties were identified as illegally acquired.

These properties were prima facie acquired from illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances by the drug peddlers.

Police also carried out a special drive against illegal mining across the Baramulla district and arrested 96 persons in this connection in the first quarter of the current year.

The police spokesperson said that 97 vehicles used in the illegal transport of the minerals which include 41 tippers, 54 tractors, and two excavators have been seized from different areas of the district during the same period.

“Police along with the officials of the Department of Mining and Geology realised fine in lakhs of rupees for illegal extraction and transportation of minerals in the district,” the Police spokesman said.

“The illegal extraction of minerals will not be allowed. People should cooperate with the Police and provide information about such elements.”
