VMS celebrates International Day of PwDs with inclusive events
Srinagar, Dec 3: Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) on Wednesday celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with enthusiasm and strong public participation at its Bemina campus, bringing together students, parents, medical professionals, legal experts, civil society members, and partner organisations to reaffirm collective commitment toward disability rights and inclusion.
The event began with an inaugural address by VMS Founder-President, Prof Mir Muhammad Maqbool, who reflected on the organisation’s decades-long work in rehabilitation, education, and support services for persons with disabilities.
This was followed by a soulful recitation of the Holy Quran by visually impaired students.
Students of Shafaqat Special Inclusive School presented a skit, ‘Right to Shine,’ highlighting the dignity and aspirations of children with disabilities, followed by a vibrant cultural ramp walk, ‘Diversity in Cultures,’ celebrating India’s traditional attire.
Additional Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, Mehreen Mushtaq, who was the chief guest, spoke extensively on the legal rights under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
She called for stronger implementation and greater awareness to ensure accessibility, dignity and full participation of PwDs.
HoD Bone and Joint Hospital, Prof Altaf Kawoosa, who was the guest of honour, delivered a detailed presentation on his 25-year experience in correcting disabilities using various surgical techniques, including modified Ilizarov procedures.
He stressed early intervention, multidisciplinary therapy, and societal responsibility in creating inclusive spaces.
Principal Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Medical College, Bemina, Dr Fazl-ul-Qadir Parray, underscored the need to bridge clinical treatment with long-term rehabilitation, praising VMS for its role in delivering continuous care and improving the quality of life of beneficiaries.
The programme was attended by noted neurologist Dr Irfan Shah, representatives of DLSA, including Secretary and Sub Judge Tabassum Parray, officials from J&K Bank, Rahim Greens, HPVT, Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, PHD Chamber of Commerce, and legal expert Advocate Sadiya Sidiq, besides members of the VMS management and executive board.
A special exhibition titled ‘Hands of Hope’ displayed vocational products crafted by students, showcasing their skill development under structured training.
Another skit, ‘Acceptance Before Expectation,’ conveyed a message of empathy and societal acceptance.
A speech therapist presented a case report on successful intervention in delayed speech development, while a student from the OPD unit shared a moving success story.
On the occasion, VMS Director Dr Bashir announced the signing of an MoU with Rahim Greens as training partners to enhance livelihood opportunities and strengthen empowerment initiatives for PwDs.
Outstanding students were felicitated for achievements in academics, sports, cultural activities, therapy progress, and vocational skills, alongside teachers, therapists and organisers who contributed to the event.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Farooq Ahmad Kaloo, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, partners and participants.
VMS also thanked Amigos for sponsoring the food arrangements.
The celebration reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to building an inclusive, compassionate society that ensures dignity, rights, and equal opportunity for persons with disabilities.
