Srinagar, Jan 31: The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has ordered strict implementation of the ban on use of nichrome-wire crude heaters in the Valley.

In a circular issued today, the KPDCL directed all its subordinate offices to immediately enforce the ban that was announced in February 2018. The ban prohibits manufacture, import, transport, sale, purchase or use of nichrome coil-based crude heaters, boilers and steamers as they do not meet the specifications prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or the International Electrotechnical Commission.

The KPDCL appreciated the efforts made by its electric divisions in seizing such appliances from consumers over the past years. However, it expressed concern that consumers were still buying these crude gadgets readily available in the market and continuing power theft.

To permanently remove nichrome coil-based heaters, boilers and steamers from the market, the circular advised businesses dealing in electrical equipment not to sell such items anymore. It warned of seizure of goods if the advisory is not followed. The KPDCL has also asked its offices to approach district administrations for ensuring compliance of the government order.

Officials said strict enforcement of the ban will prevent power pilferage and improve the overall power scenario in the region. They requested cooperation from consumers to not use crude heating appliances running on nichrome wire as it strains the network and leads to disruptions.
