New Delhi, Aug 12: As tensions escalate in West Asia or the Middle East, the United States has taken significant military steps in response to growing fears of a broader regional conflict. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a clear show of support for Israel, announced the deployment of the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine, to the region.

These military movements follow the recent assassinations of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, which have heightened concerns about potential retaliation from Iran. The assassination of Hamas’s top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran on July 31, has particularly intensified the situation.

Iran, blaming Israel for the killing, has vowed to deliver a “harsh punishment,” a threat that has put the entire region on edge. While Israel has not officially commented on the assassination, it is widely believed to be responsible.

In the wake of these developments, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising 57 countries, convened an emergency meeting at Iran’s request. The gathering allowed Iran to outline its reasons for an anticipated retaliation, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei emphasizing the seriousness of the response. The international community is closely watching for any indications of Iran’s next move, which could significantly alter the regional dynamics.

Meanwhile, the possibility of an attack on Israel from Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia and political movement in Lebanon, remains high. On Sunday night, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets towards northern Israel, a near-daily occurrence since the conflict in Gaza erupted.

This rocket fire, intended to support the Palestinian people in Gaza and retaliate against Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, has added to the volatile atmosphere. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that approximately 30 rockets were launched from Lebanon, with most landing in open areas and no injuries reported.

The IDF remains on high alert, with forces deployed and prepared for any potential escalation. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesman, emphasized that the security establishment is closely monitoring developments, particularly regarding Iran and Hezbollah, and is ready to respond if necessary.

The situation has also had a significant impact on air travel in the region. Several airlines, including Lufthansa, Swiss Air, and Air France, have suspended flights to key destinations such as Tel Aviv, Beirut, Amman, Erbil, and Tehran, citing security concerns. These suspensions reflect the broader unease and the potential for the conflict to spread.
