US deploys additional warships and fighter jets to West Asia amid rising tensions with Iran
New Delhi, August 03: The United States is escalating its military presence in West Asia or the Middle East in response to potential threats from Iran and its proxies following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The Pentagon announced the deployment of a carrier strike group, a fighter squadron, and additional warships to the region as a precaution against possible retaliatory attacks. This mobilization represents one of the biggest movements of US forces in the Middle East since the onset of the Gaza war, during which the Pentagon initially sent two carrier strike groups as a deterrent to regional militant groups.
US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby emphasized the need for preparedness, stating, "We can’t just assume that we are also potentially going to be victims of that kind of an attack, so we’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right resources and capabilities in the region, “ he said to CNN
In addition to the carrier strike group and fighter squadron, the US will send destroyers and cruisers equipped with ballistic missile defence systems to the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea. The exact warships involved were not specified, but two US destroyers previously participated in intercepting an Iranian missile barrage against Israel in April.
The Pentagon assured that missile defence forces are on heightened readiness, underscoring the "ironclad" US commitment to Israel's defence. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh reiterated the US desire to avoid further escalation, stressing the importance of diplomatic solutions and ceasefire negotiations.
Tensions remain high following the assassination of Haniyeh and Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, amid ongoing conflict in Gaza and along the Lebanon-Israel border. Iran has vowed harsh retaliation, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei declaring three days of national mourning and threatening severe consequences for Israel.
The US military is closely monitoring the situation, anticipating possible Iranian attacks similar to the April missile and drone strikes on Israel. Meanwhile, Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in significant casualties, further complicating efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
Haniyeh's funeral took place in Doha, Qatar, with thousands attending the memorial service. The assassination has intensified regional instability, prompting many countries to ask their citizens to leave the country. India has strongly advised their citizens not to travel to Lebanon. Indian Airlines have suspended their flights to Tel Aviv till 8 August 2024.
