Srinagar, Oct 5: The annual Urs of revered Sufi saint Hazrat Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA), popularly known as Dastgeer Sahib (RA), was observed with religious fervour and devotion across Kashmir on Sunday.

The main congregation was held at the historic Dastgeer Sahib (RA) Shrine at Khanyar in Downtown Srinagar. Despite rains on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, thousands of devotees thronged the shrine to participate in night-long prayers, Darood-o-Azkaar, Naat Khwani, and special religious sermons. The shrine and surrounding markets were illuminated with decorative lights, while stalls of food, snacks, and prayer items added to the festive atmosphere.

On Sunday morning, emotional scenes were witnessed as the holy relic of the revered saint was displayed. Many were seen with folded hands and teary eyes as they caught a glimpse of the holy relic amid the recitation of verses. “Every time we witness the holy relic, it feels like our prayers are being answered. There is a sense of peace and blessing in this place that words can’t describe. We are indebted to these Sufi saints who taught us about our religion and also living pious way of life,” said Nasir Ahmad, a devotee from Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

The devotees said that vendors too had a brisk business as the flow of devotees continued throughout the day. “The Urs of Dastageer Sahib (RA) is one of the busiest times for us. People from across the Valley come here, and we decorate our carts to match the spirit of the day. I have been selling traditional snacks here for years, and such occasions bring Barakah to our business,” said a local vendor.

To mention, the annual Urs is observed from the 1st to the 11th of Rabi-ul-Thani as per the Islamic calendar. This Urs marks the commemoration of the teachings and spiritual legacy of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA), a 12th-century saint. The saint is popular in Kashmir for his deep scholarship, piety, and service to humanity. Locals say that his message of compassion and spirituality continues to inspire millions across the world.

Clerics across Kashmir also organised special programmes and sermons highlighting the saint’s life, teachings, and his emphasis on peace, truth, and service to mankind. “The legacy of Dastageer Sahib (RA) reminds us to live a life of humility, sincerity, and devotion to Allah. We should not only observe these days, but also follow the teaching in letter and spirit,” said a cleric at a local masjid in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, president of Jamait-e-Hamdani, Maulana Riyaz Hamdani and chief spokesperson, GM Saqi greeted the people of the Urs of Dastgeer Sahib (RA). “We must follow the path of truth shown by the revered saint to lead to pious life,” they added.

Officials said elaborate arrangements were made to ensure the smooth conduct of the Urs. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation carried out special sanitation drives in and around the shrine and ensured continuous waste clearance.

Traffic authorities said diversions were implemented to manage the heavy influx of vehicles towards Khanyar. “Our teams remained on duty throughout the day to ensure smooth traffic movement,” a Traffic Police official said.
