It was the quaint year of 1873,when a tale unfolded as the Jammu and Kashmir Police force found its roots. A solitary officer donned the role of kotwal, leading a valiant team of 14 thanedars in the city of Srinagar. Their noble mission: to uphold law and order in the region. However, the narrative takes a somber turn as the spectre of militancy looms over the picturesque Valley since 1989. The state police, deeply embedded in the local fabric, bear the brunt of relentless attacks. Becoming unwitting pawns in the game of terror, they face the peril of abduction and brutal demise at the hands of militants. The echoes of their sacrifices linger in the troubled winds of Jammu and Kashmir. With the eruption of militancy in the Valley from 1989, the Jk police had to face the brunt of attacks. Being locals the police are easy targets of militants, abducted and brutally murdered. From low-rank personnel to special police officers to DIG-level officers many have been martyred by terrorism prevailing . The first Police Martyr in 1989, SHO Kothibagh Inspector Saidullah, set the tone for a relentless fight against terrorism that continues to this day. Despite facing upheavals in 1990 and subsequent years, the J&K Police, alongside other security forces, confronted the challenges head-on, paying a heavy price in blood and sweat. From the tribal invasion in 1948 to the present day, the force has consistently risen to the occasion, offering supreme sacrifices to uphold the nation’s territorial integrity. The nation acknowledges and honors these sacrifices, with successive governments recognizing J&K Police’s role in maintaining law and order and upholding the country’s integrity. In 2004 a deputy inspector general of police was shot dead outside a mosque in Srinagar . Another brutal murder was that of Deputy Superintendent of Police Ayoub Pandit, who was lynched by a mob in the heart of old city of Srinagar during while he was on night duty in the holy month of Ramzan on June 22, 2017.
Through decades marked by the worst terrorism, the men and women of Jammu and Kashmir Police have secured an atmosphere of peace, security, and prosperity. The elite force has been bestowed with numerous Gallantry awards, including Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakras, Shaurya Chakra, Presidents Police Medal for Gallantry, and Police Medal for Gallantry.
