Unregulated trekking to Baisaran Valley damages eco-fragile environs
Anantnag, Jan 26: In a move to safeguard the eco-sensitive trek leading to the picturesque Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam, the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has announced plans to designate a single route for pony riders.
This decision aims to prevent further ecological damage to the area, renowned for its natural beauty and adventure tourism opportunities.
As part of the initiative, over a dozen alternative routes branching from the circuit road to Baisaran will be closed off and fenced.
A high-level meeting was held in Pahalgam, involving officials from the Forest Department, Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA), and the district administration of Anantnag. The officials included Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Lidder Division, Shama Roohi; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PDA, Masrat Hashim; Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Pahalgam, Shurjeel Ali; and Assistant Director of Tourism, Jahid Azad.
The representatives from the Pony Walas Association and civil society also participated in the discussions.
DFO Lidder Division Shama Roohi raised concerns over the ecological harm caused by unregulated trekking and the creation of multiple trails through forest compartments en route to Baisaran valley.
She emphasised on the importance of protecting the local ecology and environment to all pony wallahs, urging them to take proactive measures to preserve the fragile region's natural resources.
“We had previously discussed this matter with the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, and it was decided that a single route would be designated from the circuit road to Baisaran for pony riders. The remaining routes will be closed and fenced,” she said. DFO said that pony wallahs can play their role in safeguarding their livelihoods and ensure future generations can continue to benefit from and enjoy the area's ecological richness.
CEO PDA Masrat Hashim assured full cooperation to implement the order. "We need to protect the fragile environment while ensuring sustainable tourism development,"CEO said.
Local residents and environmentalists have welcomed the move, acknowledging its significance in preserving the area's natural beauty.
“The spot would lose its charm if its surroundings are not safeguarded,” said a local.
The participants in the meeting hailed the DFO for addressing these sensitive issues and raising awareness about the potential environmental consequences.
The pony wallahs also assured of cooperation with the department to resolve these concerns for the betterment of Pahalgam.
