Kargil, Sep 22: The University of Ladakh on Monday held its second convocation at TFC Biamathang, Kargil, where Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor Kavinder Gupta conferred degrees and medals to meritorious students, while Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University Prof. Nilofer Khan attended as guest of honour.

Several dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh Dr Saket Kushwaha, CEC Kargil, Dr Jaffer Akhoon, Chief Secretary of Ladakh Dr Pawan Kotwal, MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan, Deputy CEC Leh Tsering Angchuk, Secretary of Education of UT Ladakh Bhanu Prabha, ECs of LAHDC, Deputy Commissioner, SSP Kargil, army and civil officers, heads of religious and community organisations, professors, lecturers and students participated in the event.

On this occasion, degrees and medals were awarded to meritorious students of undergraduate and postgraduate streams in recognition of their academic excellence.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, addressed this Special Convocation as Chief Guest. Addressing academics and students on the occasion, LG Kavinder Gupta said it was a moment of pride for him to attend the Special Convocation of Ladakh University. “I am sure that the education you have attained in this university will help you create a secure space for yourself in the vast world of academics and also help you face all the challenges that come in your way henceforth,” he said, addressing the awardees whom he conferred with gold medals while congratulating them for the success and honour.

LG Kavinder Gupta said that the University of Ladakh was working to achieve the targets of the New Education Policy with a special emphasis on skill development courses, aimed at producing employers rather than employees. He further stated that the university is committed to providing quality education at the doorstep for the people of Ladakh. With the number of students rising every year, new courses are being introduced to cater to their aspirations.

A historic moment was marked when Dr Tsering Choldan from Kidmang became the first Ph.D. scholar to graduate from the University of Ladakh since its establishment in 2019. He received his doctorate in political science for his thesis titled “Geo-Strategic Importance of Ladakh for India’s National Security since 1962.”

Another proud moment came when Fatima Sourqa from Suru Valley, Kargil, a gold medallist in the MTTM course, thanked the university administration for organising such a grand convocation. She said that Ladakh now offers excellent academic facilities from the primary to the university level, making it possible for students to pursue higher education within the region without migrating outside.

Vice Chancellor Dr Saket Kushwaha, in his address, highlighted that the convocation reflects the university’s strong commitment to research, innovation and education in the unique Himalayan region. Established in 2019, the University of Ladakh has emerged as a centre of knowledge, contributing to the sustainable development of the Union Territory. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the higher education journey of Ladakh.

The University of Ladakh’s first convocation ceremony was held on July 5, 2024, after its creation in 2019.
