UK set to recognise Palestinian state

New Delhi, Sept 21: UK PM, Keir Starmer is expected to announce on Sunday afternoon that the United Kingdom will formally recognise a Palestinian state, the BBC has reported.

According to the BBC, the step marks a significant shift in British foreign policy. Previous governments had maintained that recognition should take place only as part of a wider peace process and at a moment of maximum diplomatic impact.

The decision follows Sir Keir Starmer’s July warning that Britain would change its stance in September unless Israel agreed to conditions including a ceasefire in Gaza and a commitment to a sustainable two-state solution.

The move has drawn criticism from the Israeli government and sections of the Conservative Party.
