Ufair Aijaz's entrepreneurial odyssey: It's Inspirational
In Kashmir, where tradition often intertwines with modernity, Ufair Ajaz, the Managing Director of Kashmir Motors, has carved a unique path with innovation and social impact at its core.
Ufair's journey as an entrepreneur began with a profound passion for making a positive change in society, driven by a keen sense of innovation.
During his college days, Ufair identified a significant societal gap upon returning to Kashmir—girls were prohibited from riding scooters, deemed a cultural taboo. Fueled by a vision of empowerment and positive transformation, Ufair embarked on a mission to design and provide scooters specifically for girls in Kashmir. However, this visionary initiative faced considerable resistance. His own family and the community doubted the feasibility of such a concept in a society where scooters for girls were unheard of.
Undeterred by the challenges, Ufair adapted his market strategy to align with the mindset prevalent in Kashmir. This strategic shift turned out to be a turning point, leading to a remarkable 400% market growth between 2011-2012.
Ufair's endeavour not only promoted the concept of scooters for girls but catalysed a broader societal change. Females gained newfound independence and confidence, breaking through traditional barriers, and enabling them to pursue education, employment, and travel with ease.
Speaking about his entrepreneurial journey, Ufair emphasised, "Kashmir Motors is a proud third-generation business, carrying forward a legacy that originated in Maharaj Ganj in 1890 by Ghulam Mohammad Noor Mohammad Tajrane Kutub. The company has evolved into an essential part of life in Jammu and Kashmir, dealing in a wide range of products and services."
"As a third-generation entrepreneur," Ufair added, "the responsibility I hold towards our family legacy is immense. Our business has thrived and evolved into an integral part of everyday life in J&K, driving me to explore diverse ventures and create employment opportunities."
Over the last 14 years, Kashmir Motors has expanded into numerous verticals, offering a comprehensive catalogue, ranging from inverters, batteries, generators, DG sets, agricultural equipment to motorcycles, scooters, bikes, adventure off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, tippers, school buses, three-wheelers, passenger rickshaws, battery-operated autos, trucks, and technical education for youngsters. The company has recently ventured into the realm of personal cars, aiming to be an integral part of every segment of daily life.
A key differentiator for Kashmir Motors is its unwavering commitment to exceptional after-sales service. Ufair stated, "We deeply understand our customer's pain points and approach each interaction with empathy. Our emphasis on the emotional aspect, human-to-human connection, and understanding customers' needs truly sets us apart."
Adapting and Innovating: Staying Ahead of the Curve
In a dynamic business landscape, Ufair highlighted the importance of adaptation and innovation. He stressed that change is inevitable and constant, requiring careful evaluation of options and collaboration within the team. In 2015, Kashmir Motors embraced online selling and network distribution, expanding its presence across various markets. The company also developed efficient systems to accurately gauge the market and identify areas for improvement.
Ufair underlined the collective effort required for adaptation and innovation, stating, "Our team works tirelessly, day and night, to expand, innovate, and stay ahead of the curve." He emphasised the responsibility to justify actions and decisions to the team and stakeholders, ensuring their trust and support remain intact.
"Change is inevitable," Ufair asserted, "and embracing it allows us to seize new opportunities and thrive in our ever-evolving business landscape."
Challenges and Solutions
Reflecting on challenges faced, Ufair likened the entrepreneurial journey to dealing with gravity—a daily challenge. He emphasised the importance of keeping one's boots on, ready to face unique obstacles and hurdles each day. Drawing inspiration from 'Who Moved My Cheese?', Ufair stressed the significance of agility, adaptability, and preparedness in overcoming uncertainties.
"Life's lesson is to keep your boots on, always ready, much like the tenaciously adaptable Hem and Haw," Ufair remarked.
Sharing a personal setback, he recounted the 2014 floods and their impact on the water transport venture. Despite the challenges faced, Ufair emphasised the resilience of the Kashmiri community, showcasing the ability to bounce back and emerge stronger with a fresh perspective and determination.
Fostering Shared Growth
Kashmir Motors actively contributes to the local community and society at large. Ufair highlighted the company's commitment to societal upliftment and economic growth in the region it operates. The KM Technical Training and Management Institute stands as a testament to their dedication to nurturing educated and empowered individuals and contributing to societal progression.
Initiatives like the introduction of ATVs and snowmobiles in Gulmarg/Tangmarg and the promotion of local tourism in Doodpathri showcase how engaging local communities fosters shared growth and inclusivity.
"As the third generation stewarding this legacy," Ufair stated, "I am aware that the weight on my shoulders extends beyond corporate responsibilities. It's about contributing to the benefit of the public and the greater masses."
Embracing the Digital Age
Ufair said that technology plays a pivotal role in Kashmir Motors' success, streamlining business operations, especially in engineering spheres. Online platforms, social media, and connectivity with international companies have been leveraged to offer efficient services. Ufair emphasised the need for continuous learning and staying current in the face of constant technological innovations.
Building Cohesive Teams
Building a strong and cohesive team is crucial, according to Ufair. As a leader, he stressed the importance of aligning everyone with the vision and mission. While finding professionals in Kashmir can be challenging, but careful selection of team members is essential. Ufair encouraged providing guidance while allowing team members to work independently, fostering an innovative work culture.
Achievements and Milestones
Ufair expressed humility in his achievements, acknowledging that true wisdom comes from realizing one's ignorance. Awards at the international level, particularly for significant contributions to Polaris America's Indian operations, symbolize hard-earned success and a sense of community. Ufair's pioneering efforts in introducing ATV and snowmobile businesses in Kashmir have substantially uplifted the
market in India's highest region.
The Scooty project, a personal favourite, fills Ufair with pride as he witnesses mothers and daughters riding to work or shopping. Realizing the dream of uplifting Kashmir provides immense satisfaction, knowing that efforts have positively altered people's lives.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Ufair offered advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, stating, "Best is yet to come, nothing is impossible in this world. It's just that the show gets a bit delayed." He emphasised that the journey itself matters more than the destination, encouraging a mindset of continuous learning and growth.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Ufair shared the vision of expanding geographically and diversifying into other dimensions in the next five years. Anticipating trends like the rise of electric vehicles, renewable battery storages, and infrastructure development with the real estate boom, Ufair highlighted upcoming projects, including the inauguration of a car dealership and plans for rejuvenating Pahalgam.
