Two policemen from Sopore killed in Udhampur firing incident, fratricide suspected
Srinagar, Dec 08: Two police personnel died in an alleged fratricidal firing incident in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.
The slain policemen were travelling from north Kashmir's Sopore to the Subsidary Training Centre (STC) Talwara in Reasi district of Jammu region, the officials said.
The bullet-riddled bodies of the cops were seen lying inside a police van near the Kali Mata temple in Rehembal area of Udhampur around 6.30 am, the officials said.
“PS Rehmbal received an info that two policemen from Sopore travelling towards STC Talwara in department vehicle have suffered bullet injuries due to firing. Initial investigation reveals that it is a case of fratricide & suicide. Senior Police Officers reached the spot & investigation is going on,” said a police spokesman on X.
SSP Udhampur Amod Nagpure said the incident happened at 6.30 am.
“They (policemen) were going from Sopore towards the training centre in Talwara. Police officers have reached the spot. As per the initial investigation, it has been proven that AK-47 rifle was used in the incident. Two Police personnel have died. A third Police personnel is safe. They will be taken to GMC Udhampur for postmortem and other procedures,” he told news agency ANI.
Officials said the driver constable and a head constable died in the incident.
A selection grade constable, who was also travelling in the vehicle, escaped unhurt and is being questioned, they said.
